QCMP

QCMP compares two files, or two groups of files. It is not designed to isolate file differences, but simply to tell you whether or not files are the same. This can be used to verify file-by-file backup operations, for smart batch files, in makefiles, etc. QCMP is similar to DOS's COMP except that it doesn't display differences, the output is better suited for automated processing, and it returns a useful errorlevel.

The sample shows a comparison of two directories, ONE and TWO. Each directory contains two files; ONE\SAME.TXT and TWO\SAME.TXT are identical, while ONE\DIFF.TXT is different from TWO\DIFF.TXT. We ran QCMP four times to show some of the output options:

• The first run shows the default output. For each file in ONE, QCMP shows whether a matching file was found in TWO and, if so, whether or not they are the same.
• The second run (with /d1 option) is similar but omits files that compare correctly; note that SAME.TXT is no longer listed.
• The third run (with /d0 option) displays nothing at all; it simply returns an errorlevel indicating whether or not all files found were the same. The IF ERRORLEVEL command shows that an errorlevel of 1 or greater was returned, indicating that at least one file differs (or is missing from TWO).
• The final run (with /dd option) runs QCMP in "list" mode, in which it generates a simple list of files from ONE that don't match files in TWO. This mode is very useful for generating list files for postprocessing by other utilities.

QCMP is a free program, but it can't be sold or redistributed for profit.
